For made-to-order work, a deposit protects your time and materials. Here's how to ask for one and track the balance.
Tailors, caterers, cake designers and event planners all buy materials before they're paid in full. A clear deposit policy protects you and gives customers confidence that you're a serious merchant.
Put it in writing
Send a proper invoice with the full price, the deposit due now and the date the balance is due. A branded invoice looks professional and leaves no room for 'I thought it was cheaper'.
Turn on part payments
Allow part payment on the invoice so the customer can pay the deposit now. The invoice shows what's left, and reminders go out until the balance is settled.
Agree what happens if plans change
- Say upfront whether the deposit is refundable, and until when.
- Note when work starts, so cancellations after that date are clear.
- Keep everything on the invoice, not scattered across chats.
