Getting started

What to look for in a merchant account

28 July 2026 · 5 min read

Your merchant account is where every naira passes through. A few questions to ask before you choose one.

Many merchants start out using a personal account. It works for a while, until you need clean records, a team to pay or more than one way to take payment.

Questions worth asking

  • Can customers pay by card, transfer and link into the same account?
  • Can I separate branches or projects without opening new accounts?
  • Can I give staff access without giving them everything?
  • How quickly can I get a statement for any period?

Think about next year

Choose an account that fits the merchant you're becoming, not just the one you have today. Moving your money later is always harder than starting in the right place.
